Students rotated through five different stations where they practiced Stop, Drop & Roll, learned important fire safety lessons, learned how and when to call 911, and practiced using a fire extinguisher (water can). They also had the opportunity to see and touch some of the equipment firefighters use and get an up-close look at our apparatus.

One of the highlights of the day was watching a firefighter put on full turnout gear. This helps children understand what a firefighter may look and sound like during an emergency and reminds them not to be afraid or hide if a firefighter is coming to help them.

Students also participated in our annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest. A winner was selected from each grade based on this year’s Fire Prevention theme. Our winners received gift certificates for bowling at Eastern Shore Lanes & Restaurant along with tickets and game credits for Launchpad Arcade. Congratulations to all of our winners and everyone who participated!

A day like this takes a lot of people working together. We would like to thank Pocomoke Elementary School’s teachers, staff and administration for their assistance and hospitality throughout the day. A special thank you goes to Gina Dean of the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary, who once again took the lead in organizing the event and helping everything run smoothly.

We would also like to thank the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office and dispatcher Collins from the Worcester County Emergency Services for joining us and helping educate the students.

And, of course, a special thank you to our volunteer firefighters who took time out of their day to participate. Whether taking time away from work, family, or other responsibilities, their willingness to give their time helps make programs like Fire Prevention Day possible.

Fire prevention education at an early age can create lessons that last a lifetime. Thank you, PES, for another great Fire Prevention Day!
