Engine 3 (1960s)
Engine 3 – 1969 American LaFrance “900 Series”
In 1969, the department placed into service Engine 3, a new American LaFrance “900 Series” fire engine featuring a cab-forward design with a canopy cab. The apparatus was equipped with a 750 GPM fire pump and a 750-gallon water tank, providing dependable fire suppression capability for structural and rural fire operations.
Based on available photographs and historical accounts, the engine is believed to have been equipped with twin topside booster reels and triple side-mounted hard suction sleeves, enhancing its ability to perform rapid initial attack and draft from static water sources.
In 1989, the apparatus was re-designated as Engine 4 as part of a department-wide numbering change. The engine remained in service for a short period before being retired in 1990, concluding its operational life.
Engine 3/4 represents the continued evolution of American LaFrance cab-forward engine design within the department and reflects the department’s ongoing efforts to balance modernization with operational needs during the late 20th century.
