Bruch 1 (1970s)
Brush 1 (B1) – (c. 1977–1978 Chevrolet 4×4)
Brush 1, commonly referred to as B1, was the department’s first dedicated brush fire apparatus and marked a significant expansion of wildland and off-road firefighting capabilities. The unit is believed to have been a 1977 or 1978 Chevrolet four-wheel-drive pickup truck, placed into service following the presentation of funds by the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary in 1978.
The vehicle was equipped with a tank and pump system designed specifically for brush and woods fire response, allowing the department to more effectively combat fires in rural and hard-to-access areas. From approximately 1981 to 1985, the unit was also utilized as a command vehicle, reflecting its versatility and importance during a period of growth and evolving operational needs.
Designated as Brush 1, B1 served the department reliably for many years and remained in service until it was replaced in 1996 by a newer brush unit. Its introduction represented a major step forward in addressing brush and wildland fire hazards within the response area.
Brush 1 holds an important place in the department’s apparatus history as the foundation of the department’s brush fire and off-road response program, demonstrating early community support and forward-thinking investment in specialized firefighting equipment.
