Engine 4 (1970s)
Engine 4 – 1974 American LaFrance Pioneer Pumper
In 1974, the department placed into service Engine 4, an American LaFrance Pioneer pumper equipped with a 750 GPM fire pump and a 750-gallon water tank, providing dependable fire suppression capability for structural and rural firefighting operations. This apparatus replaced Engine 5 as part of the department’s ongoing fleet modernization.
The engine was designated as Engine 4 due to the department’s existing ladder-pumper apparatus not being replaced at the time, necessitating an adjustment in apparatus numbering. Despite the numbering change, the unit served as a primary suppression engine and contributed to improved fireground operations.
Engine 4 remained in active service until 1978, when it was sold to a fire company in Pennsylvania, extending its service life beyond the department.
Although its service with the department was relatively brief, Engine 4 represents a transitional period in the department’s apparatus history, reflecting both evolving operational needs and the continued use of LaFrance-built apparatus during the era.
