Tanker 1 (1970s)
Tanker 1 – 1979 Ford L-9000 / 4-Guys 3,500-Gallon Tanker
In 1979, the department placed into service Tanker 1, a new Ford L-9000 built with a 4-Guys fire body, significantly expanding the department’s rural water supply capabilities. The apparatus featured a tandem rear axle configuration and a two-door cab, providing the strength and stability required to transport large volumes of water.
Tanker 1 was equipped with a 3,500-gallon water tank and a 400 GPM rated fire pump, allowing it to support tanker shuttle operations, drafting, and fireground water supply in areas without hydrant access. The unit replaced the department’s 1974 American LaFrance Pioneer, marking a substantial increase in water capacity and operational efficiency.
The tanker served as a primary water supply apparatus for three decades, remaining in active service until 2009, when it was replaced by a newer tanker. Following its retirement, Tanker 1 was sold to a local farmer, concluding its service with the department.
The 1979 Ford L-9000 Tanker 1 represents a major step forward in the department’s tanker program and reflects the continued evolution of water supply operations to meet the needs of a rural response area.
