Rescue 1 (1980s)
Rescue 1 – 1962 International S-1900 / Saulsbury Walk-In Rescue
In 1982, the department acquired Rescue 1, a 1962 International S-1900 two-door chassis equipped with a 19-foot Saulsbury enclosed walk-in rescue body, from the Ocean City Vol. Fire Co. The apparatus was placed into service to expand and modernize the department’s rescue capabilities and replaced the 1971 Chevrolet P-30 step-van Rescue 1.
The walk-in design provided increased compartment space and improved organization for rescue equipment, allowing crews to operate more efficiently during vehicle extrication incidents. The Saulsbury body represented a significant upgrade over earlier converted rescue units and reflected the department’s continued commitment to dedicated rescue operations.
Rescue 1 remained in active service until 1990, when it was replaced, concluding its service life with the department after approximately eight years of operation. Rescue 1 was sold to New Church Vol. Fire & Rescue Co. in New Church, VA.
The 1962 International S-1900 Rescue 1 represents an important transition in the department’s rescue history, bridging the gap between early converted rescue vehicles and purpose-built modern rescue apparatus.
