Brush 1 (1990s)
Brush 1 – 1996 Ford F-250
Brush 1 was a 1996 Ford F-250 pickup truck placed into service in 1996 to support brush, woods, and off-road fire suppression operations. The unit replaced the department’s former Chevrolet brush truck, continuing the department’s commitment to addressing wildland and rural fire hazards.
The apparatus was equipped with a 250-gallon water tank and a booster reel, allowing for rapid initial attack on brush and grass fires and effective suppression in areas inaccessible to larger apparatus. Its four-wheel-drive capability and compact size made it well-suited for off-road response and perimeter fire control. The wheels and tires were later upgraded to handle the water weight and improve off-road traction.
Brush 1 remained in active service as a dedicated brush unit 2016, when it was converted to a utility vehicle as operational needs evolved. Following this transition, the vehicle continued to support the department in a non-suppression role.
The 1996 Ford F-250 Brush 1 represents an important part of the department’s brush fire response history and reflects the adaptability of the department in repurposing apparatus to meet changing service demands.
