Apparatus

Ambulance A-2 (1960s)

c. late 1960s–early 1970s Ford/Swab Ambulance

This ambulance was built on a Ford chassis and fitted with a modular ambulance body manufactured by Swab. The squared modular body, limited exterior compartmentation, round porthole-style side windows, and roof-mounted warning and siren equipment are consistent with Swab ambulance designs from the late 1960s through the early 1970s.

Operated by the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company, this unit provided emergency medical transport during a period when ambulance services were fire-based. The exact year of manufacture and service dates are unknown; however, photographic and design characteristics place the ambulance circa the late 1960s to early 1970s. This unit represents an early stage in the transition from car-based rescue vehicles to purpose-built modular ambulances within the Pocomoke community. After the ambulance was retired, it was sold to a resident and was seen around town for several years.
