Utility Wagon (1970s)
Utility Vehicle – Ford Station Wagon (c. 1968)
In the late 1960s, the department operated a Ford station wagon, believed to be a 1968 model, which was believed to be the department’s first dedicated utility vehicle. The wagon served from the late 1960s through the early 1990s, supporting operations during a time when specialized support vehicles were limited.
The station wagon was used primarily for personnel transport, support functions, and general response needs, providing the department with a flexible vehicle capable of assisting at emergency scenes and department activities. It remained in service until it was replaced by a utility van in the early 1990s, reflecting the department’s evolving operational requirements.
One longtime member recalls responding to a call in the station wagon and having to repeatedly hit the ceiling to keep the roof-mounted bubble light turning, a memorable detail that highlights both the ingenuity of the era and the hands-on nature of early emergency vehicle operations. At this time, a current photograph of Utility Van A-4 cannot be located. However, an AI-generated image has been created for reference to represent the vehicle's style and appearance during its service period.
Though modest by modern standards, the Ford station wagon represents an important milestone in the department’s history, marking the beginning of dedicated utility and support vehicles and serving as a reminder of how far the department’s fleet and capabilities have progressed.
