Ladder 1 (1970s)
Ladder 1 – 1939 Pirsch Aerial Ladder Truck
Ladder 1 was a 1939 Pirsch aerial ladder truck that marked a major milestone in the department’s operational history as the first ladder truck in the local area. The apparatus was acquired from the Ocean City Fire Company in approximately 1977–1978. Prior to its transfer, Ocean City installed a new motor, ensuring the truck was placed into service in reliable condition.
The Pirsch ladder truck significantly enhanced the department’s ability to conduct elevated firefighting operations, roof access, and rescue functions that were previously unattainable with ground ladders alone. For many years, Ladder 1 served as the backbone of the department’s ladder operations and provided critical support at numerous working fires.
During a structure fire at a residence across the street from Salem Church, the apparatus experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure. The truck became inoperable on scene, and the aerial ladder was left extended following the incident. After the ladder was repaired, the apparatus was returned to the Ocean City Fire Company in the late 1990s, marking the end of its service with the department.
Ladder 1 holds a unique place in the company’s history as the unit that introduced true aerial ladder capability to the community and surrounding area.
