Friday, November 21, 2025
On 11/21/25 at 4:57 PM, the Pocomoke City Vol. Fire Co. was alerted for a reported gas leak in the 1900 block of Clarke Ave. Stockton VFC was added to the call to assist. Pocomoke City Emergency Medical Services arrived on-scene first and found a large tank with an active leak beside a brick building. It was determined that the tank contained Liquid Nitrogen. The Worcester County HAZMAT team was requested due to the active leak.
A crew of two from Rescue Engine 2 (in full PPE) investigated the leak and was able to close a valve that was actively venting product. Upon speaking with the gas supplier, crews learned the valve venting was a pressure relief valve that had gotten stuck open. The main valve to the tank was subsequently closed.
After multiple conversations with HAZMAT team members, the Worcester Fire Marshal's Office, building maintenance, the gas supplier, and the incident commander, it was determined that the system involved was operating correctly and that all hazards had been mitigated. The crew from Rescue Engine 2 utilized a 6-gas meter and checked the area near the leak again, as well as inside the building. All levels were determined to be within normal atmospheric ranges.
Traffic in the area was detoured during the incident. Additionally, residents near the area were asked to shelter in place. There was no immediate hazard to members of the community during the incident. Lt. T. Cowger was the incident commander.
The HAZMAT team is comprised of members of the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office, as well as members from stations throughout the county. Units on-scene included, Command 1-2, Rescue 1, Engine 102, Tanker 1, Paramedic 1-2, Rescue Engine 2, Virginia Engine 1-4, HAZMAT 1, Spill 1, Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office, Worcester County Emergency Services, HAZMAT team members, fire police units, and the Pocomoke City Police Department. We want to thank everyone involved for their assistance.
